Richland Township, Pennsylvania (July 25, 2017) – A 31-year-old man’s life was cut short early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Richland Township, as per a local news source.

Richland Township Police are investigating the crash which occurred at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, July 23 on the Route 56 bypass.

Joseph S. Surgent, a resident of Johnstown, was killed when his vehicle collided head-on with another along a one-way westbound stretch of the road.

Surgent died at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries. An autopsy confirmed that he had sustained multiple blunt force injuries in the accident. Police said that he was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred and was partially ejected from his vehicle. The other car had two occupants, an unidentified driver, and a child. They were both injured and were taken to Conemaugh Memorial  Medical Center for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The report did not indicate who was traveling in the wrong direction.

Westbound lanes of Route 56 were closed for several hours following the crash.
